Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights Downgraded in UN Ranking

The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHRC) has been downgraded from Category A to Category B in the latest United Nations ranking of national human rights institutions.

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) is expected to hold its regular meeting later this year, during which Iraq’s ranking could face further review and possible downgrading.

According to reports, the primary reason for the downgrade is that the mandate of the IHRC expired in 2021 and has not been renewed due to ongoing political disputes.
