The Iraqi Parliament set the date for its session to elect the President of the Republic.
Speaking to PUKMEDIA, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) lawmaker Dr Bryar Rashid said that Parliament decided during its session held on Sunday to convene next Tuesday, 27 January 2026, to elect the President of the Republic.
Earlier, the parliament's presidency announced the final list of candidates for the presidency. In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the parliament's presidency confirmed that the list includes 19 candidates.
The Iraqi presidency is traditionally allocated to the Kurdish community under previous agreements between Iraqi political parties, and among the Kurds, the post is generally held by the PUK.
The PUK officially announced on 5 January 2026 that its candidate for the presidency of Iraq is Nizar Mohammed Saeed, widely known as Nizar Amedi.
PUK spokesman Karwan Kaznay said in a brief statement received by PUKMEDIA: “Nizar Amedi is the official and sole candidate of the PUK for the presidency of the Republic.”
Iraq held its parliamentary elections in November last year, following which the Presidency of the Council of Representatives was elected. Haibat al-Halbousi was chosen as Speaker of Parliament, while Adnan Faihan was elected First Deputy Speaker and Dr Farhad Amin al-Atroushi as Second Deputy Speaker.
In related developments, Iraq’s ruling Coordination Framework convened on Saturday and nominated Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the Rule of Law Coalition, as its candidate for the post of Prime Minister.
