Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has expressed optimism that the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet will be completed soon, saying there is a serious commitment to moving the process forward.

Speaking to the media following an event organised by The Foundation Hub in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday, Talabani talked about the latest developments in the political process and efforts to form the new cabinet of the KRG, expressing hope that the government would be established this autumn.

He stressed the need for meetings between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), highlighting their importance in advancing the formation process.

Addressing the obstacles that remain, Talabani said some difficulties may have been resolved while others persist. However, he remained optimistic that the new government would be formed.

The formation of the KRG’s 10th cabinet remains delayed due to ongoing political disagreements between the PUK and the KDP, the only two parties to have declared their intention to join the government.

The sixth parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region were held on 20 October 2024. The first parliamentary session took place on 2 December 2024, where members were sworn in, but the session has remained open and the legislature effectively inactive.

On the alliance between the PUK and the New Generation Movement, Talabani said the partnership did not necessarily mean the latter would join the government, adding that the movement was free to decide whether to participate.

“We respect their decision,” he said, while emphasising the importance of the alliance.

“This alliance is serious. We are proud of it and remain committed to it.”
