PUK Politburo: University of Sulaymaniyah Remains a Source of Pride for Kurdistan

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has congratulated the University of Sulaymaniyah, known as the “mother university” of Kurdistan, on the 58th anniversary of its establishment.

The message reads:

On the 58th anniversary of the founding of the University of Sulaymaniyah, the mother university of Kurdistan, we extend our warmest congratulations to its president, academic staff and students.

The University of Sulaymaniyah was founded on 23 October 1968, following a proposal and request by President Mam Jalal. It soon became a prominent scientific and cultural institution, playing a vital role in educating and developing generations of professionals across various fields to serve the nation.

From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, the university served as a centre for cultural exchange and the development of progressive and political thought. Its students and graduates became a driving force in the progressive Kurdish movement and played a pioneering role in confronting the Ba’ath regime.

In early 1992, academics and concerned individuals in Sulaymaniyah proposed re-establishing the University of Sulaymaniyah rather than transferring the University of Salahaddin from Erbil to Sulaymaniyah. This initiative resulted in the Kurdistan Region having two universities. The University of Sulaymaniyah was subsequently re-established through the determination and sustained efforts of the people of Kurdistan.

The university’s scientific and cultural progress in recent years, which has established its position among the leading universities in Iraq and the wider region, is a source of pride for us all.

On this occasion, we also congratulate the university on its recent initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Centre for General Studies, to examine the historical issues of our people through a scholarly approach. This initiative included the organisation of the international conference entitled “The New Revolution in Southern Kurdistan”.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on the 58th anniversary of the founding of the University of Sulaymaniyah.
