The speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament announced that an effort is being made to get the PUK and KDP electoral agencies together to discuss the election issue, after which the parliament would begin its meetings on the same topic.
On Monday, February 20, 2023, Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayaq stated during a news conference that the elections are a national matter that affects all parties and the people of the Kurdistan Region.
"Thus, political disputes should be set aside and elections should be made a priority in the negotiations since the delay is not in the best interests of the Kurdistan Region's people or political process," she added.
"At our faction's meeting with the PUK President and Political Bureau executives, we discussed elections and the current situation in the Kurdistan Region," she said.
"We agreed that the Kurdistan Parliament should begin its meetings on the issue of elections, and the Political Bureau executives have been instructed to hold discussions with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) about arranging a meeting between the electoral agencies of the PUK and the KDP," she continued. "If the two parties have a disagreement, they should address it through election-related dialogue so that the legislature can begin sessions after March 1."
"The election issue issue affects all parties, thus the meeting between PUK and KDP on the election issue will be the first step, followed by the determination of the position of the other parties on the matter," she explained.
