Iraq’s Security Media Cell has announced the start of the military disengagement process for the Shingal Protection Units (YBS), as part of plans to integrate the group into the country’s official security forces and transfer responsibility for security on Mount Shingal (Sinjar) to Iraq's federal authorities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Cell said Iraqi security forces had taken control of key positions in Shingal.

It said the integration process, covering the YBS’s weapons and military positions, formed part of a broader government initiative to bring all arms under state control and strengthen federal authority over security in the district.

The integration of YBS forms part of Iraq's Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s broader plan to bring all weapons under state control. Al-Zaidi set a June 2027 deadline for militia disarmament and announced a 90-day mutual ceasefire as the first phase of the initiative.

The YBS were established following the Islamic State’s (ISIS) 2014 attacks on Shingal and the genocide against the Yazidi people.
