Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with some writers at Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah Province.
Shalaw Kosrat Rasul and Stran Abdullah, members of PUK's Political Bureau, participated in the meeting, where a number of significant recommendations were presented and the state of culture, writers, and freedom of speech were also reviewed.
In reference to writers' positions and contributions at various stages in Kurdish history as well as their initiatives to advance and educate society, President Bafel Jalal Talabani said, "The Kurds have a remarkable history in this area and a rich literary and cultural heritage." "We are proud that Kurdish authors and their works are appreciated around the world." He claimed, "Writers were crucial in the difficult phase of the struggle and continue to have a huge influence on society; the PUK will remember your work and be glad to support you."
He stated the following in regard to the subject of restricting writers' works and freedom of expression in the Kurdistan Region: "The history of the PUK is rich with many well-known writers who have made a substantial contribution to the party and have tirelessly struggled for Kurdistan." "In a similar manner, the party has done a lot to encourage writers." "The initiatives of President Mam Jalal and Mrs. Hero attest to the fact that we have always been in favor of strengthening the principles of democracy and free expression."
"If there is such an attempt to restrict freedom somewhere else, we are not with it," he said. "I also hope that our region's reputation will not be damaged in front of the international community."
In his address, President Bafel urged writers to advance Kurdish culture and the public's concerns. "Start with Bafel Jalal Talabani and be a fierce critic of the circumstances. "Writing is a responsibility, and you bear a great and historical responsibility, so be an honest and respectful writer towards your audience."
President Bafel urged the writers in all parts of Kurdistan to work together for the development of their relationships and to serve the beautiful Kurdish culture and language.
In addition, he made a number of significant decisions about the opinions and recommendations of writers for the improvement of the literary movement and their position in the Kurdistan Region, declaring: "Because you are our pride and the pride of all of Kurdistan, we will support you and take concrete action in response to your efforts in the future."
