Seven Kurdish parties concur on five election-related issues

Seven Kurdish parties agreed to use the biometric registration of Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission and a four electoral district system based on the provinces of the Kurdistan Region as the basis for all requirements of the upcoming elections in the Kurdistan Region.
In addition, they agreed that data from the Iraqi Ministry of Planning must be used to determine the proportion of provincial seats and to reactivate the Kurdistan Region's High Electoral Commission.
On Saturday, March 11, 2023, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the Gorran Movement, the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG), the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), the Communist Party of Kurdistan (CPK), and the Kurdistan Workers and Toilers Party convened in Sulaymaniyah.
Following the meeting, the parties issued a joint statement which said:
Representatives of the Kurdish political parties represented in the Kurdistan Parliament gathered today, Saturday, at the Political Bureau of the PUK's headquarters in Sulaymaniyah in order to prepare for and reach an agreement on amending the electoral law.
During the meeting, issues related to amending the electoral law of the Kurdistan Parliament and activating the High Electoral Commission were discussed openly, and the following points were agreed upon:
1- Utilizing a four-district electoral system based on the governorates of the Kurdistan Region.
2- The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission's biometric database must be relied upon for all purposes.
3-Using data from the federal government's Ministry of Planning to determine the proportion of provincial seats.
4- Activating the Kurdistan Region's High Electoral and Referendum Commission.
5-The Parliament and the factions' Presidency are required to hold a meeting with representatives of the minorities, both inside and outside the parliament.
