Anfal victims.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Iraqi parliament released a statement commemorating the tragedy of Anfal.
The statement said:
Anfal is a crime against a nation.
The horrific Anfal campaign, carried out by the most extreme tyranny of this era against the Kurdish people and other minorities in Iraq and Kurdistan, was a method used for eradicating a nation.
The Ba'ath dictatorship buried approximately 200,000 Kurds and demolished around 5,000 villages in the name of Kurds. Besides the Kurds, Assyrians, Shabaks, Iraqi Turkmen, Yazidis, Jews, and Mandeans were among the minorities targeted by the campaign.
In accordance with the Iraqi constitution, we will continue working to meet the legitimate demands for financial and moral compensation for the proud relatives of the Anfal victims on the anniversary of the Anfal genocide. We will collaborate with our friends in the Iraqi parliament and the federal government to excavate the mass graves and return the bodies to their homeland.
On this historic day, we pay tribute to the Anfal Martyrs and all other Kurdish and Kurdistan Liberation Movement martyrs.
