The President of the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Jalal Talabani, congratulated Kurdish
journalists on the anniversary of Kurdish journalism and said: "In recent
years, some areas of the Kurdistan Region have become a place of suppression where
free voices are silenced and imprisoned."
The following is
President Bafel's statement:
I would like to wish
Kurdish journalists a happy anniversary of Kurdish journalism as well as
continued prosperity.
Unquestionably, a free
press and freedom of expression are essential components of democracy and serve
as an example for the advancement and success of a nation. Unfortunately, some
areas of the Kurdistan Region have recently not only not progressed in this
area but have also turned into places to silence and imprison free speech.
Journalists are falsely accused, and the international community has a negative
impression of the region.
We truly believe in free
journalism and brave reporters. We have never believed that we are above
criticism, and we welcome any effort to point out our errors and direct us in
the proper direction. As a result, we will stick to our unwavering principles
and support all courageous and free voices.
Bafel Jalal Talabani
President of PUK
