In an effort to amend the electoral legislation in the Kurdistan Region, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has taken its case to the Federal Court.
Luqman Wardi, Deputy Chairman of the PUK faction in the Kurdistan Parliament, told PUKMEDIA: "We have been attempting to come to an agreement on the amendment of the election law in the Kurdistan Region for two years. However, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has not taken any significant action in this regard, and the revision of the law has stopped."
"The PUK opposes holding elections in accordance with the 1992 Election Law No. 1, and our faction in the Kurdistan Parliament filed a complaint against the law, calling for its amendment before the elections," he added.
Wardi further said: "If the Federal Court rules that the Kurdistan Parliament's term extension was unlawful, it should find a way to amend the electoral legislation and stop the Kurdistan Region from holding elections under the previous law because that will not change the situation and democracy is being lost in the process."
"The PUK's demand for the electoral law's amendment is not only the PUK's demand; it is also the demand of the parties and the people of the Kurdistan Region, who do not support the outdated law," said Wardi.
On the recommendation of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the PUK, the PUK Election Agency and the KDP Election Bureau met several times to discuss electoral law modifications, voter registration, and the reactivation of the commission. After eventually agreeing to change the law so that voter registration would serve as the basis for elections, the KDP has broken its word. Therefore, the PUK, the Kurdistan Islamic Union, the Kurdistan Justice Group, and the Gorran Movement have responded by demanding reform to the electoral legislation and stating that they will not allow the upcoming parliamentary elections to take place under the current electoral law.
