President Bafel: The fulfillment of national interests must be our priority

President Bafel receives Speaker of Kurdistan Parliament and PUK faction
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan ( PUK), Rafaat Abdullah, Decision-Maker of the Executive Board of the PUK Political Bureau, Aso Mamend, Executive Member of the Political Bureau, Qubad Talabani, Supervisor of the Secretariat Office of President Mam Jalal received the Speaker of Kurdistan Parliament, Dr. Rewaz Fayaq and members of PUK faction.
President Bafel began the meeting by praising the PUK faction for their historic and courageous role in the last session of the Kurdistan Parliament and reiterated the PUK's unwavering backing for the Parliament Speaker, during which they successfully halted an illegal act, won the support of the people, and protected the Parliament's dignity by adhering to the rules of procedure of the Parliament.
He said: "Your prior role in achieving democracy in the region was a source of pride for the PUK, loyalists of the people and supporters of democracy who want to hold fair elections on time and not meddle with the will and vote of the people."
"Since the start of the political and legal issues relating to the elections, the PUK has worked with the utmost responsibility for national compromise and consensus, and required actions have been done by all political parties to alter the electoral law and reactivate the commission, " President Bafel said."The people's will should be implemented rather than imposed." Furthermore, as we saw yesterday, quota seats should not be used to settle major conflicts. What should not have happened did, unfortunately," he continued.
Regarding the minorities' representation and freedom of choice, President Bafel said: "Since the beginning, we have been advocating for the minorities' complete representation and opposed their exploitation in political and party conflicts."
President Bafel, remarking on the regional and Iraqi situation overall, advised PUK MPs to rely on the law to preserve people's rights and prevent legitimate institutions from being manipulated for political benefit.
President Bafel urged all parties to handle this delicate period with care during the meeting and expressed optimism that the country will overcome this challenge with the help of its devoted citizens. "The fulfillment of national interests must be our top objective," he declared.
Regardless of what happened in Parliament, the PUK retains its unequivocal views and is open to all conversations and understanding aimed at addressing the impediments and holding fair elections on schedule.
