Former journalist Mark Stroh, the U.S. Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, is concerned about the deterioration of press freedom in the Kurdistan Region and said: "We continue to be concerned about recent backsliding on press freedom."
The concerns were expressed during a meeting between Stroh and several Kurdish independent journalists, which was posted on the official Facebook page of the U.S. Consulate in Erbil, and he commended the journalists for their ongoing efforts to provide impartial coverage of the Region's politics, economy, and society.
"We continue to be concerned about recent backsliding on press freedom, including arbitrary detention, warrantless device searches, and lack of implementation of the IKR Press Law and Access to Information Act," the U.S. Consul General said.
From 2000 to 2002, Mark Stroh was a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer. He has a bachelor's degree in history and political science as well as a master's in journalism.
Mark Stroh previously held the positions of U.S. Consul General in Karachi, Pakistan; Acting Assistant Secretary and Director of International Media Management at the Office of Global Public Affairs in Washington; and Director of Strategic Communications and Assistant Press Secretary on the staff of the Executive Secretariat. His previous role was deputy spokesperson for the National Security Council (NSC).
