Deputy Prime Minister and French Consul General
Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received the new French Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, Yann Braem, and discussed several issues of mutual interest.
Qubad Talabani congratulated the newly appointed French CG on his appointment during the meeting on Thursday in Erbil. He also expressed his readiness to offer any kind of support and assistance and hoped that during his term, relations between the Kurdistan Region and France would continue to advance in all areas.
Both parties discussed the historical ties between the Kurdish people and France throughout the discussion. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked France for its cooperation and support during various historical moments for the Kurdish people. Mr. Braem, on the other hand, emphasized the historical significance of his appointment as the new French Consul General in Kurdistan.
Another topic discussed at the meeting was the state of affairs in the Kurdistan Region, particularly human rights and freedom of expression. They agreed to work together in the future to improve the region's freedom of expression and human rights.
They also discussed the upcoming Kurdish parliamentary elections and the Iraqi provincial council elections. With particular reference to the situation in Kirkuk, both parties expressed their desire for the Iraqi provincial council elections to take place in a calm and stable environment. In this regard, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that discrimination between the Kirkuk communities has occurred in recent years, saying: "After the elections, we must revert to President Mam Jalal's principles to strengthen the atmosphere of peaceful cooperation and ensure that no community experiences marginalization or oppression."
Concerning the upcoming parliamentary elections, Talabani declared: "We will spare no effort to ensure that the elections remain fair and timely."
