Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani met with a United
Nations delegation led by Claudio Cordon, the Secretary-General's Deputy
Special Representative in Iraq. Throughout the meeting, they discussed a
variety of topics of mutual interest.
The meeting was held in Erbil on Tuesday and was attended
by Daban Shadala, Deputy Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG)
Foreign Relations Department. The meeting's main goal was to resolve the
ongoing disputes between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, particularly
regarding the Kurdistan Region's budget.
In this regard, Talabani
explained the latest developments to the guest delegation and said, "The KRG
team engaged in constructive and fruitful conversations with the relevant
parties of the federal government during their recent visit to Baghdad, with
serious efforts being made to amend the budget
law."
"At this point, it is
imperative for the KRG and all Kurdish political factions to engage in serious
negotiations with Iraqi parties and other groups inside the Iraqi
parliament," Talabani added. "The objective should be to modify the budget law in a manner that
effectively resolves the issues about employees' salaries and the Region's budget."
During the meeting, they also discussed the election of
provincial councils and the process of establishing local governments, with the
Deputy Prime Minister emphasising the importance of respecting public votes and
desires when establishing local governments based on election results. "It
is critical to halt any attempts to exclude or diminish the influence of any
political party or community," he stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised the importance of
holding Kurdistan's parliamentary elections transparently and equitably,
ensuring everyone's satisfaction while safeguarding the rights of all parties,
including different communities.
In addition, the meeting discussed regional developments
as well as Iraq's political situation. Both parties agreed that Iraqi factions
should take into account the delicate circumstances and implement a prudent policy
to avoid any actions or positions that jeopardise Iraqi and Kurdish stability.
