The conflict in
Gaza threatens the entire region's stability, and the international community
must step up to put an end to the aggression against Palestine, said Iraqi
President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid during a meeting with US Ambassador Alina L.
Romanowski at Baghdad Palace on Tuesday.
Both sides agreed that coordinated
international efforts, as well as dialogue between regional and international
parties, are critical to reducing tensions and preserving peace and security. President Rashid also raised
the subject of the coalition forces in Iraq, stressing that their role is
restricted to training the Iraqi Armed Forces and other advisory functions.
However, a specific plan of
action must be developed, he said.
In addition, President Rashid stated
that Iraq aims to mediate conflicts between opposing interests and points of
view by maintaining harmonious relations with both its neighbours and the
global community. He underlined the necessity of
putting an end to the aggression and ongoing targeting of civilians in Gaza and
other Palestinian cities, while also restating the nation's firm stance on the
Palestinian issue.
"The Gaza
conflict has put the stability of the entire region in jeopardy," he
noted, emphasising the need for the international community—especially the
United States—to take action and put an immediate stop to the aggression
against Palestine. The U.S. Ambassador emphasised how
crucial it is to coordinate efforts on matters of shared interest and to
continue building relations with Iraq within the parameters of the strategic
framework agreement. She also restated the United States' commitment to
advancing security and stability in the region and assisting global initiatives
to put an end to hostilities against the Palestinian people.
