The United States (U.S.) State Department condemned the attack on the Khor Mor gas field, stating that they stand with Iraq and the IKR, against these outrageous and senseless actions.
The State Department's spokesperson Mathew Miller said in a statement that the U.S. condemns Thursday’s attack in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR), which damaged civilian infrastructure and jeopardized access to power throughout the IKR.
"Once again, we stand with our partners in Iraq, including the IKR, against these outrageous and senseless actions, and we urge Iraqi authorities to investigate and bring to justice those who are responsible," he stated and concluded his statement with an affirmation of U.S. support for both Baghdad and Erbil.
"The United States will continue to work with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government in support of Iraqi sovereignty and security," he affirmed.
In a separate statement, Alina Romanowski, Ambassador of the U.S. to Iraq, said that the attack damaged infrastructure & exposed millions to power outages in midwinter.
Stephen Hitchen, British Ambassador to Iraq, and the French Embassy in Iraq also condemned the attack that resulted in a 2,800-megawatt drop in power production, causing major power outages throughout the Kurdistan Region. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani has ordered an investigation into the attack and warned the perpetrators that they will face consequences for their actions.
An attack on the Khor Mor gas field, one of Iraq's largest gas fields, on Thursday, January 25, 2024, has led to a temporary suspension of production, resulting in major power cuts across the Kurdistan Region.
