Jumana Al-Ghalai, spokesperson for Iraq's Independent High Election Commission (IHEC), clarified that the date that will be set for the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections is a proposal and not a definitive one.
Ghalai told PUKMEDIA that her meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, with the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region and the United Nations' Representation is to set a proposed date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
"We are awaiting the court's decision, therefore we will petition the federal court to address our complaints regarding the electoral law of the Kurdistan Region," she stated.
"The Federal Supreme Court needs to address the constituency issues and make decisions on them. As this will alter our agenda, and the commission will require four months to carry out the election process," she explained.
The PUK lodged a lawsuit with the Iraqi Federal Court regarding Articles 1-9-15-22-36 of the electoral law in the Kurdistan Region. The court rescheduled 11 hearings regarding the issue.
Ghalai declared: "As of February 15, 2024, more than 31,889 individuals in the Kurdistan Region have registered at voter registration facilities. Among them, 18,000 people born in 2006 have completed the registration process. Additionally, over 2.35 million individuals have gotten new voter cards up to this date."
