PUK & KDP's joint news conference in Kirkuk
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) met in Kirkuk and agreed that positions in the province should be filled through negotiation and mutual understanding.
Rawand Mala Mahmoud, Head of the PUK's Kirkuk Headquarters, told PUKMEDIA that a delegation from the KDP branch in Kirkuk visited the PUK headquarters today to discuss a number of important issues.
One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the formation of a local government in the city and the improvement of relations between the two sides.
Following the meeting, Rawand Mala Mahmoud told a news conference that the Kurds in Kirkuk are united and emphasised the importance of all parties actively participating in the formation of the local government.
He stated that both the PUK and the KDP believe that issues in the province should be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding among the parties. For this reason, they intend to visit all of the winning parties in Kirkuk.
Mohammed Kamal, the head of the KDP branch in Kirkuk, stated that they are working to find a Kurdish governor for the city who is acceptable to all parties and Kirkuk residents.
"Our efforts with the PUK to form the provincial council are serious, and we encourage other parties to join us," he stated.
On Sunday night, the political parties that won the Kirkuk provincial council elections met in Baghdad, in the presence of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, to plan the formation of the local government.
The prime minister's press office announced that the parties have agreed to continue discussions until a resolution is reached, as well as to develop a shared plan for electing the governor and council head within the next two weeks.
According to the announcement, the winning parties presented their agendas during the meeting to establish a common agenda and identify common points.
On February 21, 2024, the winning political parties in Kirkuk met for the first time to discuss the formation of the Kirkuk province council's local administration. Both Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani attended the meeting.
