PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), addressed the Kurdish people on the 33rd anniversary of the 1991 Kurdish uprising, stating that they will correct the misguided political direction.
On March 5, 1991, the Kurdish uprising began in the town of Ranya, located north of Sulaymaniyah. It later expanded to other areas of the Kurdistan Region, resulting in the formation of the Kurdish Autonomous Region and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
President Bafel's message for the uprising's anniversary said:
"Today, we honour the Kurdish people's historic uprising, as well as their valour and bravery. We pay tribute to all the courageous Peshmergas who illuminated the night and brought hope for a better future to Kurdistan.
The PUK is aware of the many brave sons you have given this country, as well as the proud and glorious past you have documented. We remember the extent of your suffering and the exile you endured. The PUK is eternally grateful to you and the brave families of our martyrs for this.
We are aware that there are widespread concerns that the goals for which our martyrs gave their lives have not been fully realised. The services are inadequate and do not meet our expectations. As previously stated, we will correct the misguided political direction and protect the Kurdish constitutional role in the political decision-making centre in Baghdad. We emphasise that the PUK will not abandon its citizens.
We have previously made significant progress for the betterment of our people with the help of God and the Kurdish people, and the results are obvious to all. Our actions are solely focused on safeguarding the paramount national interests and ensuring the people's prosperity while protecting Kurdistan's territory."
