On Monday, April 1, 2024, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with Thomas Seiler, the European Union's (EU) Ambassador to Iraq, at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad.
President Rashid emphasised Iraq's strong commitment to pursuing reform, combating corruption, and strengthening the rule of law, justice, and human rights. He highlighted the government's efforts to implement a programme aimed at curbing corruption, boosting the economy, and promoting investment opportunities.
In addition, he emphasised the significance of embassies and diplomatic missions in accurately communicating the positive advancements in Iraq to their countries and peoples. This is particularly crucial in terms of the notable progress in security and stability observed in Iraqi cities, as well as the enhancement of living standards for citizens. He also acknowledged that Iraq encompasses numerous communities and sects that are actively committed to fostering peaceful coexistence.
President Rashid stated that the Presidency took action to release around nine thousand individuals who had either completed their sentences or were being held without a judicial ruling. This was achieved through the establishment of a committee comprising the Presidency of the Republic, the Presidency of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Ministries of Justice and Interior, and the National Security Advisory.
Ambassador Seiler conveyed his delight in meeting President Rashid, emphasising the significance of the EU's involvement in broadening the scope of collaboration with Iraq across political, economic, and security domains. He acknowledged Iraq's status as a crucial strategic ally for the EU.
