Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, welcomed a delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Universities of Jordan, led by Dr. Mamoun Al-Debi'e and they discussed strategies for enhancing academic cooperation between the two parties.
The meeting took place in Erbil on Monday, May 6, 2024. It was attended by Aram Mohammed Qadir, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Region, and Fuad Al-Majali, the Consul General of Jordan in the Kurdistan Region. The initial topic of discussion was the historical connections between Jordan and Kurdistan. The participants acknowledged and highlighted President Mam Jalal's significant role in establishing this historic relationship. They expressed the importance of collaborating to enhance cooperation in other domains.
The Deputy Prime Minister commended the Kurdistan-Jordan Higher Education Forum and emphasised its significance in enhancing academic ties between the two nations.
The visiting team highlighted their country's preparedness to support the Kurdistan Region in advancing the higher education sector. Both parties acknowledged the significance of formalising a memorandum of understanding between the universities of the Kurdistan Region and Jordan to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills, as well as enhance academic relations, particularly in the areas of health, tourism, and environment.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that universities should assume a more prominent role in the Kurdistan Region's development and align themselves with the demands of the market. He said there is a highly skilled workforce in Kurdistan; however, it has not been effectively structured and tailored to meet the demands of the market and therefore, universities should enhance their capabilities in this area.
