Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the resumption of voters' biometric registration in the governorates of the Kurdistan Region.
Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson for the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), informed PUKMEDIA that the IHECs Board of Commissioners decided to resume the biometric registration of voters in all governorates of Iraq, including the governorates of the Kurdistan Region.
The Federal Court previously ordered the IHEC to suspended the preparations for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, scheduled to take place on June 10, 2024. The decision due to a complaint lodged by Masrour Barzani against the enforcement of paragraph (2) of Article (2) of the registration and approval system for the list of candidates for the Kurdistan Parliamentary Election No. 7 of 2024. This provision states that the Kurdistan Parliament is composed of 100 seats, distributed among the constituencies as follows: Erbil with 34 seats, Sulaymaniyah with 38 seats, Duhok with 25 seats, and Halabja with 3 seats.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and other Kurdish parties, except the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), have expressed their readiness for the parliamentary elections on schedule.
Based on information PUKMEDIA obtained, the governorate of Sulaymaniyah leads all governorates in the average number of voter card returns—more than 15,000 cards each week. 52,109 biometric voting cards had been returned to voters nationwide by the end of the previous month, with 37,373 of those cards being in the Kurdistan Region.
