Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) received Mark Stroh, United States (U.S.) Consul General, in Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah.
They discussed the latest political and security developments and placed particular emphasis on the ongoing negotiations and the importance of achieving a shared perspective to address the challenges and promote the advancement of the Kurdistan Region.
President Bafel reiterated the PUK's dedication to conducting elections as planned and emphasised that the Kurdistan Region's situation and governance process must undergo transformation.
He said: "Elections are the optimal choice and a crucial measure to attain justice. Consequently, any effort to postpone the process undermines the people's will and harms our Region."
Concerning the local administrations of Kirkuk and the disputed regions, President Bafel emphasised the importance of expediting the progress and finalising the legal and constitutional procedures.
He said: "We hope that these steps will benefit people and enhance the sense of harmony and coexistence. We will oppose any infringement upon the rights of voters and their voting entitlements. We assure the people of Kirkuk, that we will steadfastly protect their rights and prevent any harm to their future."
The meeting also deliberated on the consolidation of the Kurds and the challenges impeding the political progression in the Kurdistan Region. President Bafel restated the PUK's commitment to address the problems and emphasised: "Our unity guarantees our strength and survival. Consequently, we have consistently been open to dialogue and collaborative efforts, and have embraced every endeavour that seeks to benefit the Kurdistan Region and its cherished people. Our objective is clear and we will make any compromises necessary to attain the highest, national benefits. The lives of our people are above everything and we will take every step for this purpose."
