The federal government's Ministry of Migration and Displacement has announced that approximately 500 Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Hassan Sham 2 and Khazir camps in Erbil Province were returned to their homes in Nineveh Province.
Samer Mashkur, the Director of the Kurdistan Region Governorates Department at the Federal Ministry of Migration and Displaced, stated to PUKMEDIA that the government aims to resolve the issue of displacement in the country.
He also stated, "The Minister of Migration and Displaced, Ms. Ivan Faiq Jabro, has announced that displaced families in Erbil's camps are willing to return to their original areas of residence voluntarily." In this context, 521 IDPs who were in Erbil's Hassan Sham 2 and Khazir camps have returned to Nineveh."
Mashkur also stated that the Minister directed the Ministry's staff to provide financial grants, relief aid, and durable goods to newly returned families in order to promote stability in the communities they are returning to and assist them in rebuilding their lives.
He clarified that there is no set deadline for closing the IDP camps in Erbil and Duhok provinces. However, the ministry is committed to quickly resolving this matter, and displaced families are eager to return to their respective regions.
On November 7, 2024, the Ministry of Migration and Displacement declared the closure of all displaced camps in Sulaymaniyah Province. The Ministry stated that the remaining IDPs are in Erbil and Duhok provinces. In addition, the Council of Ministers Presidency has formed a committee to discuss the procedures for permanently closing the camps and ensuring that the IDPs have the resources they need to return to their original regions.
