According to the spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the recent provincial council elections have demonstrated the Kurdish majority in Kirkuk Province. The PUK Spokesman stressed the importance of swiftly appointing a new governor for the city and forming a local government comprising all winning parties.
In a statement to PUKMEDIA, Saadi Ahmed Pire, the Spokesman for the PUK, asserted that the outcome of the provincial council elections has proven that the Kurds constitute the majority in Kirkuk and that it is imperative to designate a Kurdish governor for the city.
Pire said: "As Kurds, it is crucial that we resolve our issues in order to make progress in effectively serving the people of Kirkuk."
He also stated: "The Kurdish political parties' failure to resolve their issues has led to the intervention of the Federal Supreme Court, which has issued decisions and provided solutions to these problems. If we fail to resolve our disagreements in Kirkuk through practical measures, we will encounter serious consequences. In such a scenario, the federal government and the Federal Court will intervene and address the issues, although the outcome may not be satisfactory to all parties involved."
Pire emphasised the need for the PUK to present a series of suggestions to the Kurdistan Democratic Party and other political parties in order to serve the Kurds and other communities within the city.
PUK Spokesman also stated that the governor of Kirkuk should be elected from the local population of Kirkuk and that the governorship should be allocated to the Kurds, specifically the PUK, with the participation of all parties that have won elections to ensure that the city is managed in accordance with the voting results.
