Kirkuk Provincial Council Press Conference.
The first session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council took place on Saturday, August 24, 2024, following the election of the governor and the council head. The meeting focused on many topics and concerns pertaining to the province.
Following the meeting, the head and members of the Kirkuk Provincial Council held a press conference, during which the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, Nashat Shahwez, announced: "In the Kirkuk Provincial Council meeting, we have reached an agreement on several matters, the foremost of which is the establishment of a committee tasked with revising the Kirkuk Provincial Council's internal regulations."
Shahwez stated that they also discussed the issue of ministerial titles assigned to Kirkuk Governorate through contracts, in accordance with the federal general budget. This includes over 7,000 job openings in various departments throughout Kirkuk. The objective is to establish a fair and transparent mechanism for allocating these job positions without marginalising any group.
The head of the PUK bloc clarified that during the session, the third matter discussed was the request for the Turkmen community and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to propose qualified individuals to fill the available positions assigned to them. It was emphasised that there is a strong belief in genuine collaboration among all communities in Kirkuk Governorate, and it is desired for all council members to actively participate in the sessions.
On August 10, 2024, the Kirkuk Provincial Council held its first meeting in Baghdad, during which Rebwar Taha, the leader of the Kirkuk is Our Strength & Will Coalition, was elected as Kirkuk's governor based on the Kurdish community's share. Mohammed Ibrahim Hafez was elected to lead the Kirkuk Provincial Council on behalf of the Arab community.
