Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid welcomed a high-level Iranian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, at Baghdad Palace, the Iraqi Presidency reported on Sunday, October 13, 2024.
Also present were Iraq’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, and Mohammad Kadhim Al-Sadiq, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Iraq.
According to the Iraqi Presidency, the meeting began with discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran, where both sides also addressed recent developments in the region, particularly the escalating conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
In his remarks, President Rashid underscored the vital importance of the enduring ties between Iraq and Iran.
“Our bilateral relations are essential, and we must enhance our cooperation across all sectors to promote mutual growth, security, and stability,” he said. “The historical, social, and religious bonds that unite our two nations are unique, and we are committed to serving the interests of our people while fostering regional peace and stability.”
Regarding the current regional tensions, President Rashid strongly condemned the ongoing aggression in Lebanon, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of innocent civilians. He reiterated his demand for an end to the conflict in Gaza, stressing the need for decisive actions to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
“The continued hostilities in Gaza and Lebanon pose significant threats to both regional and global peace,” President Rashid warned. “If allowed to persist, they could lead to catastrophic consequences for stability in the Middle East and beyond.”
The President also called for diplomatic solutions to de-escalate the situation, expressing deep concern about the humanitarian suffering and the long-term risks of prolonging the conflict.
“Iraq will not tolerate any attempts to use its territory as a base for aggression against neighboring nations,” he declared. “We stand firmly against any actions that jeopardize the safety and security of our cities and communities.”
Foreign Minister Araghchi shared Iran’s perspective on the current crisis and reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to upholding global peace and security. He condemned the attacks on Lebanon and Gaza, describing them as blatant violations of international law that undermine efforts toward peace and stability.
Both sides expressed their shared determination to work together to ensure peace and security in the region and to prevent further violence.
