US CG Advocates for Media Freedom in Kurdistan Region

United States Consul General in Erbil, Steven Bitner, regards professional journalism as a vital component of any democratic process. He stated that the US advocates for the establishment of an environment where journalists can operate freely and without fear.

In a recent discussion about the media landscape in the Kurdistan Region, Consul General Bitner highlighted the challenges faced by journalists and met with various organisations committed to promoting media freedom in the Region.

In a Facebook post, Bitner said: "The media and professional journalism are critical parts of any democracy, holding leaders accountable and informing the public of issues that affect them."

He added, "The US supports an environment where all journalists can work freely without fear of intimidation, discrimination, or harassment and encourages the full implementation of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq's Press Law and Access to Information."
