The Kurdish blocs have boycotted the parliament session that was due to take place today, Thursday, May 12, 2024, meaning the quorum was not met, and the session has been postponed until next Saturday.
Dr. Bryar Rashid, a member of parliament from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, explained in a statement to PUKMEDIA: "As the item concerning the draft amendment to the budget law was removed from the session’s agenda, we, as the Kurdish blocs, decided to boycott the session."
He continued: "This boycott resulted in the failure to achieve a quorum, prompting the parliament presidency to delay the session until next Saturday."
The parliament had planned to hold its regular session to discuss several draft laws, the most significant of which was an amendment to Article 12 of the Federal Budget Law.
Badria Hussein, a representative from the PUK bloc, previously told PUKMEDIA: "It is expected that the parliament will conduct the second reading of the draft amendment to Article 12 of the budget law, which concerns the export of oil from the Kurdistan Region."
She added: "The federal government approved the amendment to Article 12 after discussions with the Kurdistan Regional Government, and the Iraqi parliament will review and vote on this issue."
