Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The sudden collapse of Bashar al-Assad's rule over Syria marks the culmination of a nearly 14-year rebellion and a key moment in a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of people, displaced half the population and drew in outside powers.
US President-elect Donald Trump took to social media early Sunday morning, December 8, 2024, to weigh in on the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria.
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Furthermore, Syria's state media officially announced the fall of former Syrian president Bashar Assad's regime.
The current Syrian Prime Minister, Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali posted a recorded message through social platforms and announced that he will not be leaving the country and called on all sides in the country to refrain from any harm or damage to state's public properties.
He also expressed his readiness for the transition of power and to cooperate with the opposition forces, and any leadership chosen by the people.
After that, Ahmed al-Sharaa – instead of Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), currently leading the country’s armed opposition, in a statement called on the rebel forces to leave country's settings unharmed.
Bashar al-Assad ascended to the presidency following the demise of his father, Hafez al-Assad, in 2000, and maintained his position for 24 years.
On the morning of Sunday, December 8, 2024, Syrian armed opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham entered the capital, Damascus, and declared: “Following 50 years of oppression under the Ba'ath regime and 13 years of violence and tyranny, after an extended struggle against various occupying forces, we announce the conclusion of this dark period and the start of a new chapter for Syria.”
