Iraqi Leaders Convene to Tackle Escalating Syrian Crisis & Safeguard National Stability

Iraq's top leadership's meeting.
In a decisive meeting convened at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Iraq’s top leadership, led by Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani and President of the Supreme Judicial Council Judge Faiq Zaidan, addressed the escalating crisis in Syria and its implications for Iraq and the broader region.
The State Administration Coalition, representing Iraq’s highest political and governmental authorities, deliberated on the potential security, political and humanitarian repercussions of the Syrian crisis. Central to the discussions was the situation of Iraqi nationals in Syria, with a renewed focus on facilitating their safe return to Iraq.
They reviewed ongoing measures to safeguard Iraq from spillover effects, emphasizing the need to enhance security along the Iraqi-Syrian border. The leaders endorsed government-led initiatives aimed at bolstering border defenses and strengthening Iraq’s capacity to address emerging threats.
The coalition reassured citizens that proactive security protocols are in place to maintain stability and protect the country from any adverse developments.
The coalition reaffirmed Iraq’s unwavering commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the security of its people. It called for a united international effort to foster stability in the region and support peacebuilding initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a call to develop a strategic roadmap for Iraq-Syria relations, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with Arab and allied nations to address shared challenges.
