The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) disclosed its 2024 operational statistics, revealing that it supplied over 6,000 proactive intelligence reports concerning terrorist groups to the Iraqi Joint Operations Command in the preceding year and noted that more than 5,600 suspected terrorists were apprehended in 2024.
INSS Spokesperson Arshad al-Hakim informed the Iraqi News Agency that the terrorism issue is a fundamental and significant focus of the National Security Service, which has attained commendable outcomes in this regard. He noted that "there exists a cell dedicated to counter-terrorism that operates in conjunction with the Baghdad Security Department and provincial authorities."
He stated that "in 2024, over 6,000 proactive intelligence reports were submitted concerning the enemy's locations, hideouts, stockpiles, equipment, and weapons," emphasising that "this intelligence was provided to the Joint Operations Command, and with high-level coordination, air strikes were executed."
The INSS spokesperson confirmed that "the total number of suspected terrorists apprehended in the previous year amounted to 5,606, alongside the confiscation of substantial quantities of weapons and explosive belts."
Hakim further stated that three or four qualitative operations were conducted over the past year. The first involved the elimination of the terrorist Mohammed Abdul Malik Taha in the Daquq district, recognised as one of the most perilous terrorists in the region. The second operation succeeded in killing terrorist Khamis Sharif Shihan, also known as Abu Ibrahim al-Iraqi, a prominent leader of the Islamic State organisation. Additionally, the National Security Service units in Salah ad Din Governorate successfully thwarted a bombing operation. In the fourth operation, the individual referred to as the Wali of Iraq was killed.
