Deputy PM & British CG Address Key Issues in Kurdistan

Deputy PM & British CG meet in Erbil.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Andrew Bizley, the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, on Thursday, 9 January 2025, in Erbil. They discussed ongoing negotiations to form the regional government, the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, and other matters of mutual interest.
The main focus of the meeting was the dialogue among political parties regarding the formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Qubad Talabani emphasised that discussions are continuing to reach an agreement that satisfies all parties involved, highlighting that “the next government must be a service-oriented government addressing the primary issues faced by the people of Kurdistan.”
On the subject of relations with Baghdad, the Deputy PM stated, “All of our efforts are directed towards resolving issues related to salaries, the budget, and other outstanding problems between the Region and Baghdad in accordance with the Constitution.”
The British CG underscored the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding, affirming his country’s support for these efforts.
The meeting also touched upon enhancing opportunities for young people. Qubad Talabani highlighted the Foundation Hub and Foundation Lab initiatives aimed at supporting creative youth and small business owners. Deputy PM stated, “Our aim with these projects is to showcase the capabilities of young people and increase their role in advancing Kurdistan’s economy.”
The British CG recognised the significance of these initiatives and expressed both his and the British Consulate’s willingness to support them.
