More than 30,000 civil servants in the Kurdistan Region are awaiting retirement referrals following the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) decision to lower retirement age.
According to Sadir Othman, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Retirees Union, the KRG's decision states that persons born in 1960, 1961, and 1962 will be referred to retirement retrospectively as of December 31, 2024.
"These retirees' files will be immediately forwarded to the General Directorate of Retirement, and their current month's pay would be paid by the General Directorate of Retirement in the Kurdistan Region," he added.
He also stated that the KRG used to operate under the old retirement law, but now it is subject to the general retirement law in Iraq, which stipulates that every retiree must receive a full year's salary as an end-of-service bonus, while the KRG formerly paid retirees six months' salaries.
The KRG recently issued a decision to refer civil servants who turn 60 to retirement starting from 2025. Previously, the retirement age was 63 years.
