On the 34th anniversary of the historic Kurdistan uprising against the defunct Baath regime, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement commemorating the courage and sacrifices made by the Kurdish people.
The uprising, which began on March 5, 1991, marked a pivotal moment in Kurdistan’s history, leading to the liberation of key cities such as Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Duhok, and Kirkuk, and ultimately securing the victory that ushered in a new era of freedom for the Region.
The Politburo’s statement acknowledged the substantial gains made over the past three decades, including significant steps in democratic governance, self-rule, and progress in the economic and social sectors. However, the Politburo stressed the ongoing need for a comprehensive qualitative development to further strengthen Kurdistan’s future.
The Politburo said that this could only be achieved by correcting the course of governance and ensuring a just, elected Kurdish government that prioritises the well-being of its citizens, particularly the younger generation that has benefitted from the fruits of the uprising.
The statement reaffirmed the PUK’s commitment to overcoming current challenges and working towards greater stability and prosperity for the Kurdistan Region. With unity and collective effort, the PUK is determined to face the future and ensure that the values of freedom and justice, established by the uprising, continue to shape the lives of the people of Kurdistan.
In conclusion, the PUK paid tribute to the martyrs of the uprising, honouring their sacrifices and reaffirming the need for continued progress toward a more prosperous and democratic future for the Kurdistan Region.
