PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), welcomed the agreement signed between Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The Syrian government reached a breakthrough deal with the Kurdish-led SDF that control the northeast of the country, the Syrian presidency said on Monday, 10 March 2025. The agreement would bring most of Syria under the control of the central government that replaced the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in December. The two parties agreed on “the integration of all the civilian and military institutions of the northeast of Syria within the administration of the Syrian state, including border posts, the airport, and the oil and gas fields.”
President Bafel's message said:
I warmly welcome the agreement between Mr. Mazloum Abdi and Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa
This is a significant and positive step towards promoting coexistence and working together in the new Syria.
This is the right direction, which will provide political and security stability, and we have demanded and worked for it since the beginning.
We hope that this step, which protects the rights of our people in the West, as well as all other communities, will mark a new beginning in the development of a democratic and people-approved country where the constitution serves as the foundation for cooperation and collaboration.
As always, I support my brother Mazloum Abdi's efforts to establish peace and stability in the region.
Bafel Jalal Talabani
President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
