The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced a date for the commencement of the voter registry update, which will also include individuals born in 2007 on the electoral lists.
The media department of the Iraqi parliament issued a statement revealing that, on Tuesday, 11 March 2025, the parliamentary legal committee hosted the chairman and members of the Board of Commissioners, along with senior staff from the IHEC, to discuss the ongoing preparations for the parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of this year.
The statement further explained that "the meeting saw numerous questions raised by members of the legal committee regarding the technical and logistical aspects of the commission's work and its readiness to conduct the elections to the highest standards of integrity and transparency." It also mentioned that the IHEC reviewed "measures taken to ensure the success of the electoral process, most notably the updating of fingerprint device programmes, the contracting of the examining company, and addressing the issue of unreadable fingerprints, which affect fewer than two million out of the 19 million registered voters from the previous provincial council elections."
According to the statement, the IHEC also unveiled plans to convert the voter’s photo on the voter card to a biometric form to address the issue of fingerprints that do not appear. Regarding the voter registry update, the commission explained that "the update process will begin between 15th and 20th March and will last for one month, during which those born in 2007 will be included in the electoral lists."
