PUK Politburo: Halabja Chemical Attack Crime is an Unforgettable Wound

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) published a statement commemorating the 37th anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja, underlining that the PUK struggles to heal the wounds and better compensate the victims of the genocide committed in this city.

On 16 March 1988, the fallen Iraqi Ba'ath regime bombed the city of Halabja with banned chemical weapons, martyring over 5000 innocent Kurdish civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. The attack also injured more than 10,000 others, most of whom still suffer from their wounds to this day.

The PUK Political Bureau's statement said:

We commemorate with deep sadness the 37th anniversary of the brutal crimes committed against our people in Halabja by the forces of the fallen Ba'ath regime against the defenseless people and civilians of that city

The crime committed by the Ba'ath chauvinists' against this city were a hatred against Halabja's historical significance in cultural, civilisational, and political movements. Halabja had a rich and progressive Kurdish thought and was always a pioneer in our people's uprisings and revolutions, particularly the new revolution of our people. The preliminary detachments of this region in Halabja and Sharazur took up arms against the regime and began the revolution.

Following the uprising, the PUK, at its own expense and later through the Kurdistan Regional Government, worked tirelessly to restore prosperity and provide services to Halabja and its people. Following the official designation of Halabja as the fourth province of Kurdistan by the Kurdistan Parliament and the Kurdistan Regional Government, the PUK is working harder than ever to heal the wounds and better compensate the victims of genocide in this city.

On this tragic occasion, we reaffirm that the PUK leadership, through its bloc in the Iraqi parliament, the Halabja administration team, and the federal government, is working to continue reading and passing the bill recognising Halabja as the 19th province of Iraq and providing all of its rights in line with the law and the principles of the constitution.
