In order to ensure the smooth and trouble-free conduct of the parliamentary elections, Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) needs at least six months to finish the technical and logistical preparations, an Iraqi parliamentarian confirmed.
In a press statement, Iraqi parliamentarian Imran Karkoush stated that the parliament has a limited amount of time to determine whether to keep the current electoral law or amend it.
He pointed out that it takes the IHEC six months to finish its work and get ready for the elections, stressing that the parliament must provide the IHEC enough time to decide on the law quickly without disrupting the IHEC's work or the remaining timetable for starting its technical operations.
MP Karkoush also noted that the parliament may move toward compromises or maintaining the current law without any amendments.
The IHEC has already begun updating the voter registry on 25 March 2025, with one month in hand to finish the process.
Iraq is gearing up for its highly anticipated legislative elections in November 2025, as according to the law, elections must be held every four years in the country. The last parliamentary elections were held in 2021.
