The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament has warned that it will continue to boycott parliamentary sessions unless the Halabja provincial law is added to the agenda. A representative for Halabja in Parliament confirmed that “the PUK bloc and the Kurdish blocs remain steadfast in their stance on the Halabja issue.”
Chro Hama Sharif, a member of the PUK bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, told PUKMEDIA: “We are resolute in our position on the Halabja issue and will continue to boycott parliamentary sessions unless the Halabja provincial law is included on the agenda.”
She further stated, “All Kurdish blocs share a unified stance and will not attend any parliamentary session. We have 65 members in Parliament.”
She clarified that “the Kurdish representatives will return to Baghdad and resume their duties, but their attendance is contingent on the Halabja law being placed on the agenda, without it being tied to any other legislation, and on its passage through a vote.”
The Iraqi Parliament has completed the second reading of the draft law to establish Halabja Governorate, with only the final vote remaining. However, the law has yet to be passed due to the absence of Parliament members, who have cited various excuses, despite their previous commitment to approving the legislation.
