Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), reaffirmed support for the Kurds in Syria, stating that the PUK has consistently advocated for Kurdish unity and remains committed to supporting the Kurdish liberation movement in Syria.
The Unity of Kurdish Rank in Rojava Conference kicked off in Qamishli, northeastern Syria, on Saturday, 26 April 2025, with the participation of 400 representatives from across the greater Kurdistan region-including the north, south, east, and west-to foster intra-Kurdish dialogue and unity. The conference was also attended by a delegation from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) which was led by Amin Baba Sheikh, with Salar Sarhad as member of the delegation.
Amin Baba Sheikh delivered a speech on behalf of the PUK President, in which he said: "We extend our best wishes for the success of this conference and reaffirm our support. The PUK has consistently advocated for Kurdish unity and remains committed to supporting the Kurdish liberation movement in Syria. We believe that stability in Syria is integral to the stability of the broader region, and therefore, the rights of all communities must be safeguarded."
He added: "Our objectives will be realised through national unity and mutual understanding. We are acutely aware of the challenges and developments unfolding in the region. To address these challenges, it is essential that all political parties, as well as ethnic and religious communities, stand together in pursuit of our collective rights."
In conclusion, he said: "The stability of Syria has a direct impact on regional stability. The unity of political parties serves as a beacon of hope for both the international community and the Kurdish people. It is imperative that we remain vigilant against any attempts to undermine the unity of the Kurdish people."
Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), delivered a speech in which he reaffirmed his appreciation for PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, stating: "For 14 years, we have defended West Kurdistan, and we will not forget the efforts of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani. We extend our gratitude to him."
He further emphasised: "The rights of Kurds must be guaranteed in the new Syria, and it is the collective responsibility of all to safeguard the achievements of the Kurds in West Kurdistan."
Abdi also addressed the significance of Kurdish unity, stating: "The Kurdish Unity Conference in West Kurdistan is intended to promote the unity of Syria, not its division."
He also said: "We fully support Mr. Öcalan's call for peace."
The Unity of Kurdish Rank in Rojava Conference is attended by major Kurdish political parties, women and youth organisations, intellectuals, artists, and religious figures from Rojava (northeast Syria), as well as prominent Kurdish personalities from cities such as Sham, Aleppo, Hama, Bab, and Azaz.
The preparations for the conference have been underway for years, according to the organisers of the conference who have previously emphasised that the conference is aimed at unifying the Kurdish political stance in the region. Around 60 media outlets and 200 journalists are expected to cover the proceedings.
Among the key topics will be the 13-point agreement between the Kurdish National Council (ENKS) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which is anticipated to be a central focus of the discussions.
This high-level gathering underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen Kurdish unity in response to current regional challenges and to advance the collective interests of the Kurdish people in Syria and beyond.
