Dialogue table.
A series of high-level diplomatic engagements are set to take place this week, signalling renewed efforts to resolve some of the world’s most pressing conflicts through dialogue rather than conflict.
Tehran and Washington Resume Nuclear TalksTehran and Washington are scheduled to reconvene in Muscat on Sunday, 11 May 2025, for the fourth round of negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, following a week-long delay. The Iranian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while Steve Witkoff, the United States President’s special envoy to the Middle East, will head the American team, according to Iranian media reports. Previous rounds have taken place in both Muscat and Rome, underscoring the ongoing commitment to diplomatic engagement.
Putin Proposes Direct Talks with UkraineRussian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday proposed direct talks with Ukraine aimed at ending the war, an initiative welcomed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy who said Kyiv was willing to talk but Moscow must agree to a ceasefire.
President Putin has proposed talks with Ukraine in the Turkish city of Istanbul that he said would be held without preconditions and aimed at a durable peace. He suggested Thursday, 15 May 2025, as the date for starting the talks.
President Zelenskiy said in a statement on social media website X it was "a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war" but "the very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire."
India and Pakistan Agree to CeasefireIn South Asia, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, a development announced by the United States President following a night of U.S.-mediated talks.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence,” the U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social.
The foreign ministers of both nations are scheduled to meet on Monday, 12 May 2025, to pursue a lasting resolution.
The Path to Peace: Dialogue Over ConflictThese developments highlight a growing international consensus: regardless of the duration or intensity of conflict, sustainable peace is achieved by returning to the negotiating table. Recent events demonstrate that dialogue remains the preferred means of resolving disputes and preventing further escalation.
