Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the extension of the voter registry update period until 15 June 2025, as well as the deadline for registering political alliances, parties, and individual candidate lists.
In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the IHEC explained that the Board of Commissioners decided to extend the voter registry update process until the end of the official working day on Sunday, 15 June 2025.
The IHEC initially launched its voter card and biometric data renewal campaign on 24 March 2025. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process in advance of Iraq’s parliamentary elections.
In a separate statement, the IHEC also announced its decision to extend the registration period for political alliances, parties, and individual candidate lists—both for general seats and those reserved for minority communities—wishing to participate in the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections. The new deadline is set for the end of official working hours on Thursday, 22 May 2025.
It is worth noting that this is the third time the IHEC has extended the registration period. The first extension was issued on 4 May 2025, moving the deadline to 14 May. A second extension was announced on 13 May, further pushing the deadline to 20 May.
The previous parliamentary elections, held on 10 October 2021, resulted in the election of 329 members to Iraq’s fifth parliamentary session. Voter turnout at that time was recorded at 42.15 percent, with the new parliament convening for its first session on 9 January 2022.
