Iran's foreign ministry announced on Monday, 2 June 2025, it would have to see if there are changes in the U.S. position on sanctions, as the two countries negotiate a deal to resolve a decades-long dispute over Iran's nuclear programme.
"I regret to inform you that the American side has not yet been willing to clarify this issue," ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a weekly press conference in Tehran.
In remarks carried by the official IRNA news agency, Baghaei stressed the need for guarantees regarding the “real end of the sanctions”, including details on “how and through what mechanism” they would be removed.
"It must be clear to us how the oppressive sanctions against the Iranian people will be lifted, to ensure that past experiences are not repeated," he added.
U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, continue to insist that Iran must cease all uranium enrichment under any potential agreement that could see sanctions eased on the country’s ailing economy. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi firmly rejected that position stating: “No enrichment means we do NOT have a deal.”
Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, who has been mediating between Iran and the Trump administration, presented elements of a U.S. proposal for a nuclear deal between Tehran and Washington during a short visit to Tehran on Saturday.
Iranian and U.S. delegations wrapped up a fifth round of talks in Rome last month, after which Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi said there was potential for progress after Oman made several proposals during the negotiations in Rome.
"We have just completed one of the most professional rounds of talks ... We firmly stated Iran's position ... The fact that we are now on a reasonable path, in my view, is itself a sign of progress," Araqchi told state TV.
"The proposals and solutions will be reviewed in respective capitals ... and the next round of talks will be scheduled accordingly."
