PUK's 50th founding anniversary ceremony in Sweden.
A ceremony was held in Sweden to commemorate the 50th founding anniversary and the Golden Jubilee of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), with representatives from Kurdish and Iraqi political parties in attendance.
Organised by the PUK’s headquarters in Sweden, the event took place in Stockholm on Saturday, 7 June 2025. Attendees included Dr Omer Sheikhmus, a member of the PUK’s founding committee, the party’s representative in Sweden, as well as delegates from various Kurdish and Iraqi political parties, the Federation of Kurdish Associations, and Swedish civil society organisations.
In his address at the event, Dr Sheikhmus reflected on the historical significance of the PUK’s establishment, emphasising the critical context in which it was founded and the broader role of the Kurdistan Liberation Movement. He highlighted the enduring contributions of the PUK, particularly the leadership and legacy of the late President Mam Jalal (Jalal Talabani), in shaping Kurdish and Iraqi political life.
Dr Sheikhmus outlined the PUK’s enduring vision for a free Kurdistan and a democratic, stable Iraq. He underscored the party’s pivotal role in fostering political equilibrium, advancing the democratic process, and promoting community coexistence and institutional governance.
“The PUK has consistently been a vital force in maintaining the balance of power, supporting the democratic process, promoting reconciliation, and establishing legal and governmental institutions—including the parliament and the Kurdistan Regional Government,” he stated.
Speaking to PUKMEDIA, Bakhan Burhan, head of the PUK’s Swedish centre, said: “Representatives from over 30 Kurdish, Iraqi and Swedish political parties and organisations attended the commemoration. Their participation underscored the importance of the PUK’s political and diplomatic efforts over the past five decades.”
The Golden Jubilee celebration reaffirmed the PUK’s continued relevance and commitment to its foundational values of unity, democracy, and peaceful coexistence.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is a political party founded in the Kurdistan Region on 1 June 1975. Its principles are democracy, human rights, and the right to self-determination. The PUK is a member of Socialist International.
