Israel and Iran have been engaged in mutual drone and missile attacks for the past 10 days. While several projectiles have been intercepted before reaching their targets, a PUKMEDIA investigation has found that 14 drones and missiles have landed in the Kurdistan Region. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
Due to its geographical proximity to Iran and its position between the two warring countries, the Kurdistan Region—along with Iraq more broadly—has inadvertently become a corridor for airspace violations. Both Iran and Israel have used Iraqi and Kurdish airspace to carry out strikes, resulting in a number of their drones and missiles crashing in the region when they fail to reach their intended destinations.
Since the outbreak of the conflict on 13 June 2025, the following incidents have been recorded in the Kurdistan Region:
15 June 2025
-Two missiles struck the Haji Omeran area.
-One missile landed in the Chamchamal district.
16 June 2025
-A missile fell in the Qaradag district.
-A drone crashed in Erbil province.
17 June 2025
-Two missiles landed in Erbil.
19 June 2025
-A drone crashed near the Taqtaq border.
-Another drone went down in Dukan district.
-A further crash occurred in Makhmur district.
21 June 2025
-A drone crashed in Makhmur district.
22 June 2025
-A drone crashed in the Sharbazher area.
-Two drones crashed in Erbil.
The Kurdistan Region covers an area of 78,736 square kilometres, comprising over 18% of Iraq’s total landmass. It includes the provinces of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok and Halabja, and shares a direct border with Iran. As a result, missile and drone debris frequently falls in various parts of the region, where it is either recovered or neutralised by specialised teams.
