IHEC Spokesperson: Over 770,000 Apply for Polling Station Roles as Iraq Approaches Elections

The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has released the most recent figures regarding applications for polling station staffing ahead of the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections.
Speaking to PUKMEDIA, IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai stated “According to our latest data, the total number of applicants for polling station roles has reached 771,655, comprising 518,681 men and 252,974 women. Of these, 429,000 are employees, while the remaining 342,655 are graduates or students.”
On the commission’s preparations and related updates, al-Ghalai added: “A draw will be held on 5 August to allocate electoral numbers to coalitions, political parties, and independent candidates.”
She went on to note that the total number of individuals standing for the Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for November, stands at 7,926 candidates.
Of those, 5,701 are male and 2,225 are female. Baghdad Governorate has the highest number of candidates at 2,353, whereas Duhok Governorate has the fewest, with only 61 candidates standing.
The Federal Council of Ministers had previously confirmed 11 November 2025 as the election date during a cabinet session held on 9 April, chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.
