U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Tuesday to discuss recent developments concerning Iraq’s energy infrastructure and Kurdish employees' salaries.
According to a statement issued by U.S. State Department, Secretary Rubio expressed concern over recent attacks targeting energy facilities, including those operated by American companies. He underscored the need for the Iraqi government to ensure accountability and take effective steps to prevent further incidents.
The Secretary also highlighted the importance of consistent salary payments to public employees in the Kurdistan Region and called for the resumption of oil exports through the Iraq–Türkiye Pipeline.
In response, a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that al-Sudani had discussed the recent attacks on vital oil installations in the Kurdistan Region, as well as in Saladin and Kirkuk governorates, describing them as deliberate assaults on Iraq’s national economy. The Prime Minister noted that Iraq’s security forces, in coordination with the international coalition, are actively monitoring the sources of the attacks.
The statement added that the phone call also addressed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) commitment to transferring both oil and non-oil revenues to the federal treasury, in accordance with the provisions of the current budget law and recent rulings by the Federal Supreme Court. He underscored the importance of resuming exports through the Iraq–Türkiye Pipeline and ending all forms of smuggling and illicit activities undermining Iraq’s oil sector.
