U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday, 28 July 2025, that he would shorten the 50-day deadline previously given to Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, setting a revised timeline of “about 10 or 12 days”.
Speaking alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting at his golf resort in Scotland, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Moscow’s continued aggression, stating: “I am disappointed in President Putin—very disappointed in him.” He added, “We’re going to have to look, and I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number.”
“I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today,” President Trump told reporters. He said an official announcement on the new deadline would likely be made “tonight or tomorrow”, but insisted there was “no reason to wait—if you know what the answer is.”
President Trump had initially issued the 50-day ultimatum on 14 July 2025, warning the Kremlin that it must end hostilities with Ukraine by 2 September 2025 or face severe economic penalties. At the time, he pledged to impose secondary tariffs of up to 100 per cent targeting Russia’s remaining trade partners.
Despite this warning, Russia has escalated its aerial assaults on Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, a record number of drone attacks took place over the past week, including a massive assault on 9 July 2025 involving 728 drones that caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure and residential areas.
